As a world traveler, I am honored to be able to see different and amzing scenery on a monthly basis. However, nothing could have ever prepared me for the first time that I was able to travel to the holy land of Israel. The people, the culture, the foods, the historical monuments that date back to Jesus and before are all breathtakingly preserved and beautiful for the eyes to behold. Israel is a country in the middle east that is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. It was founded on May 14, 1948 with a population of over 8 million people. Its’ capital is Jerusalem. It is bordered on the north by Lebanon, on the northeast by Syria, on the east by Jordan, with the West Bank and Gaza strip respectively to the east and west and by Egypt to the southwest.

RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AND PRACTICES IN ISRAEL
Traditionally the Israeli people study the Torah. This is essentially the first five books of the bible. It is believed by many experts in that region of the country that the Torah was originally given to Moses on Mt Sinai. Other beliefs by many Israeli people are that there is a God or a supreme power guiding the world, that good deeds are rewarded, the Jewish people are the chosen among others, the Torah and mitzvot are from God and are his commands, that bad deeds are punished, they believe in the coming of the Messiah, there is a next world beyond death, those who are not led and adhere to the mitzvot will be severely punished and that any Jew that does not govern his life according to their observations brings danger to all Jewish people.
The practices of the Israeli people include: lighting of the Shabbat candles, reciting the Kiddish every Friday night, worshipping in the synagogue every Saturday morning, not allowed to work in public on the Sabbath, participating in Passover Seder, lighting the Hannukah candles, fasting on Yom Kippur, not eating pork or shellfish, celebrating with the Bar Mitzvah, weddings, burials, putting mezuzah on the front door and giving to charities.
